Explore the art and science of communication.

The Department of Communication is a collaborative community of faculty, students, and staff at the forefront of understanding the ever-changing communications and media landscape. At the very heart of all communication lies creativity and innovation. Students studying communication at Walla Walla University can explore the world through studying abroad, participating in research, acting on stage or in films, or interning with a variety of companies.

With a communications degree, students graduate with marketable skills that fit many different job roles in social media, public relations, journalism, fundraising, marketing, human resources, and more.

Student Spotlight

Stevan is a film, TV, and media major who is one of four WWU students currently attending the Los Angeles Film Studies Center. For students who are interested in studying in LA, this program, hosted through the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities, provides a unique opportunity to complete elective credits with on-the-ground experience in the field of filmmaking. Walla Walla University is the only Seventh-day Adventist university that participates in this program and also provides on-set opportunities through the Center for Media Ministry on campus.


College Experience

What will your college experience look like as a communication major?

Adventist Colleges Abroad (ACA): Explore the world and study abroad through the ACA program, and learn a foreign language that you can earn an academic minor for. 

Film festivals: Attend annual trips to the SonScreen Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, and the International Christian Film Festival. 

Honor society: Students who maintain the required GPA and satisfactory department standing are inducted into Nu Zeta—the WWU chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association honors society. This provides professional advancement and connections when continuing on into the professional field. 

Internships: Strategic communication majors intern as content writers, and social media and public relations assistants. Global communication majors intern internationally in linguistics and public relations positions. 

 


Career Path

What can your career path as a communication major look like?

WWU's communication program will equip you with a versatile set of skills in communication, critical thinking, and adaptability that are necessary for diverse and dynamic careers throughout the industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Overall employment in media and communication occupations is projected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations from 2022 to 2032. About 114,300 openings are projected each year, on average.“ Common career paths include public relations specialist, social media manager, corporate communication specialist, and journalist.
